Photography at Atlas Magazine
One of the many benefits of working at a Library Science library is that I get to see all the books before they're catalogued & shelved. One of the best I've seen so far is all about particularly gorgeous webdesign, specifically, to do with really well-done e-zines. The site that most caught my fancy is Atlas Magazine. I love their design, and their fun webtoys (be sure to check out the Log Buddha, an interactive storytelling program), and most especially their photography, linked above. The best, in my East Asian Studies-obsessed opinion, is the selection of photographs featuring Chinese Rural Architecture. Maybe I should send this link to my old major adviser.

My Mom's Summer Reading Suggestion
I never paid much attention to John Adams in the scheme of American presidents. He always seemed so overshadowed by Washington & Jefferson, but thanks to this new biography of him (first chapter linked above), it looks like he may get more of the respect that he deserves. I don't think he'll ever overtake FDR as my favourite Prez, though.

Ain't No Such Thing as the Summertime Blues
I felt inspired. I made a mixtape and put the tracklisting up at Art of the Mix. Let me know if you want a copy.

William H. Macy, Journeyman Actor
You know, The Onion's AV club always has the best, most interesting interviews with the best subjects. They're like the Fresh Air of the print world. Speaking of which, Terry Gross recently interviewed my current #1 authorcrush, Michael Chabon, so go listen to that, too, wouldja? And for those of you who are very into Mr. Chabon, his personal site yields much in the way of tasty literary delights. Swoon.

Captain Haddock Curses
I found this when I was looking for some John Waters stuff last week. I've never read any Tintin, but I like it when people put harmless, strange words to good, expletive use. There are so many great ones here that I may never run out of outraged exclamations, but Bougainvillea!, Vermicellis!, and Fancy-dress Fascist! have to be three of the very best.

Advantage: Kidman
Like, duh. She's been on the cover of a zillion magazines, and her press junket for Moulin Rouge has provided a bunch of perfect opportunities for her to be both professional and tragic. And because she's not offering much in the way of details, the whole drama takes on a meta-movie veneer: Nicole Kidman, movie star, is the now star of her own little real-life psychodrama with Cruise, who appears to be stuck in a second-banana role as the hardball player. But who knows what Cruise's next move will be? And how will Kidman parry? This is way better than Survivor; it's closer to All About Eve.

Big Bad Chinese Mama
Just click. It's hilarious and angry and brilliant, from start to finish - just the humourous touch missing from Orientalism. Via misterpants.

She's Sexy! She's Cute! She's Popular, To Boot!
Eliza Dushku, ladies and gentlemen. Potty mouth, soon to be ex-smoker, reluctant badass. Mean is back with a new issue, and I'm a happy camper.
